Shin Budokai 2 is the next game from Bandai based on the increasingly popular Dragonball Z anime series. Shin Budokai 2 is based, not on a story from the Anime series, but from a new story revolving around Future Trunks. Having helped Goku and friends to defeat Cell in the past, he goes home to the future to beat Cell once and for all, and take revenge for the killing of his master, and friend, Gohan. Having killed Cell, the battle continues.

The game is split into Seven game modes, the first is called Another Road, this mode is the main story mode of the game, it follows Future Trunks back in the future and having just beaten the Androids and Cell, he is trying to settle down to a normal life, however, like everything in this world a new evil is just around the corner, Babidi and Dabura are trying to resurrect Majin Buu, Trunks knows he cannot beat him alone, and so he once again travels back in time to ask for the help of Goku and friends, who in this timeline are all still alive, and brings them to the future to assist him. However, unlike in the past timeline, Babidi creates clones of the Z-Fighters and Frieza and Cell to stop them, during the battles with the clones, the energy collected is used to resurrect Buu. Once Buu is resurrected the same thing happens, he ignores Babidi, but in another twist in the story Babidi travels to New Namek to collect the Dragon Balls to wish for obedience. This is a great, yet strange story that has so many twists that take it away from the story DBZ fans are used to, even Broly makes an appearance. The game defines the moves each character has and allows you to customise the stats, using booster cards set out on a 9x9 grid, some of which are locked and you must buy an unlock card to allow you to use the space.

The next mode is Arcade, this mode is a battle against the CPU against random opponents, best of 3 bouts. This is best done after completing the Story mode, as you can unlock multiple transformations for your characters.

Next is the Z-Trial, this mode consists of three sub modes, Survival, Time Attack and Challenge. Survival mode is a test of your defensive as well as offensive skill, keep fighting enemies until your health runs out, after each battle you do get some health back but not much so you must use it wisely. Time Attack is as the name implies is a test of how quickly you can dispose of the enemy, a set of courses are set out for you and you must defeat all in the shortest time. The last is challenge mode, this is different to anything ever done in previous games, you don't have to defeat the enemy, but to beat the challenge, you must fulfil the requirements, the first for example is to get two Aura blast hits in, to do this press R and the Triangle to get the Aura Blast attack. Each of the Z-Trials completed earns you Money to use in the shop on the game.

There is also a Network Battle which allows you to fight against and trade cards with other players. and lastly the Practice Mode which is the same as always and allows you to perfect your killer moves.

A very good game, let down only by long loading times and poor use of dialogue. The cut scenes are just characters popping up with a dialogue box, no action. And once again, the use of unnecessary bad language is apparent once more in this game, just like the last, and I must say again, not needed!
