Welcome to the world of DragonBall Z : Shin Budokai. Based on the adventures of Goku in the DBZ movie #12 "The Rebirth of Fusion: Goku and Vegeta". As with all the PS2 Dragonball games the graphics are great, and like almost all PS2 games the graphics get better as new games are introduced. This game is no exception, the graphics are great and the animations for the fighting attacks are brilliant.
The overall game play is brilliant, it incorporates brilliant battle sequences with all the best characters from the amine series. The game is split into five modes; Dragon Road, Arcade Mode, Z Trial Mode, Network Mode and Training mode.
- In Dragon Road, you play your way through a legendary
adventure featuring a special unlockable character called
Pikkon, he is a fighter that resides in the world after death
and fights Goku when he dies for the umpteenth time.
- Next is the Arcade Mode, this is the world tournament mode,
you choose your fighter and fight your way through the
challengers to get to the final and win to receive Zenie (Game
Money).
- Z Trial Mode is a new feature (For DBZ games at least) it is
split into two sub sections; Time Attack and Survival Mode.
- Time attack is exactly as it says, Defeat your opponents as
fast as possible, and Survival mode is also as it says, Defeat
multiple opponents in succession and as you go, your health
decreases.
- Network Mode allows you to connect to another player and
fight against them to see who is the best fighter.
- Training Mode allows you to get a feel for the game's
controls and each fighters attacks.
However, there are some shortfalls, the second fight on the Dragon Road is against Krillin, Goku's friend, and Krillin's wife is mentioned, however the name is wrong, Krillin is married to an ex-android named simply "18", however, the game calls her "19". Now for those, like me, who have seen the series know that "19" was destroyed. Also the text during the game has some grammar mistakes. I have also noticed the use of the word "Crap" a few times so far in the Dragon Road story mode, as well as Pikkon saying "Craptacular (WTF?) and Craphead". So, in short, slight errors in the game text and mild swear words in the game content.
As an added feature you can customize a profile card, just like in American Wasteland where you create your own tag, this is to show your opponents when participating in Network Mode battles. As you go through the game and you get more Zenie, you can buy new stamps to put on your card and customize it yourself.
One feature that is different from the previous Budokai games on the PS2, the autosave feature must be turned on, this is annoying as if you forget, you can lose your game data if you forget to save, as has happened to me and (at time of writing) have only had it for 7 hours.
Overall, the game is brilliant and makes a great addition to the DragonBall games, has great graphics, great gameplay and is just great fun to play.
