| Tekken Dark Resurrection is the latest game in the successful beat-em-up series and is also the most comprehensive in the series, with everything that Tekken 5 had and an unbelievable amount of extras that make this game so complete. On top of the usual Story mode, there is a new Arcade mode where you take on another player of a similar rank and once you’ve defeated them you have a brief chance to choose who you want to fight next out of 3 different opponents or exit. Then there is the new Tekken Dojo mode, in which you go round from Dojo to Dojo fighting the other competitors to become top of the ranking and the Dojo Champion. There are also two bonus game modes for you to unlock and play, the first of which is the joyful return of Tekken Bowl mode, which was originally a bonus game mode in Tekken Tag Tournament; it has now been remade for Dark Resurrection. It plays pretty much the same as in Tekken Tag, but also has a new Striker mode where you have to get the most points possible with a limited number of balls and each time you get a strike, you earn another go. The second is the return of Command Attack mode from Tekken 4, where you have to complete a list of different moves in the fastest time. Lastly there is Gold Rush mode, which is the first extra game mode you can unlock; it’s basically the sort of game mode you would usually find in the Soul Calibur series, the harder you hit your opponent, the more coins that fall for you to pickup, then at the end of the fight you get to keep the all of the coins you collect as credit to buy stuff with.
Dark Resurrection also introduces two brand new characters to the series, the first is Lili, whose full name is Emily Rochefort and is the only daughter of an oil tycoon and resides in Monaco, then there is the hard hitter Sergei Dragunov, who is a member of SPETSNAZ. These two, along with all of the character from Tekken 5 and the return of Armor King, makes this game’s roster equal to that of even Tekken Tag Tournament, especially as all the characters are available at the start of the game, meaning that you’ll never be tired of playing as the same characters again and again.
The first thing that most people are amazed by when they start playing Dark Resurrection is the graphics, which are just amazing, probably some of the best there is on PSP so far. Then there’s the gameplay, which is just as you would expect from any Tekken, fluid-fighting moves combined with loads of combos, which all play really well, even if you find the D-pad awkward at first, it doesn’t take long to get use to performing massive combos and you can always use the analogue stick if you prefer.
As in Tekken 5, you receive money for winning a match and then that can spent on either unlocking videos or for customising your character by buying different clothes or extra accessories for them to wear. This means that you can make the characters appear as you want them to, change their hair cut, give them a silly wig and then give them give them a cool pair of shades and an alien stuck to their leg…
So if you’re looking for a real beat-em-up, then look no further then the best available, Tekken Dark Resurrection.
